Algae Bioreactors in Pipes

Algae are often called the raw material of the future. There are over 40,000 different types of algae. Because of their high sugar, starch, oil and omega fatty acids content, a productivity which is seven times higher than corn can be realized. These cultivated plants can be processed into biomass and biofuel. Furthermore, the organisms bind carbon dioxide (CO2), which they require for growth. Engineers at GF Piping Systems succeeded in finding the ideal balance between light permeability and durability. They developed a piping system made of transparent PVC, which allows sufficient light to pass through in the right wavelength for microalgae to be grown in the interior of the pipe. Quarter Turn Valves – What are the common types?

The Plug Valve is used primarily for on-off service and some throttling services. It controls flow by means of a cylindrical or tapered plug with a hole in the center that lines up with flow path of the valve to permit flow. A quarter-turn in either direction blocks the flow path. The Ball Valve is similar in concept to the plug valve but uses a rotating ball with a hole through it that allows straight-through flow in the open position and shuts off flow when the ball is rotated 90 ° to block the flow passage. It is used for on-off and some throttling services. The Butterfly Valve controls flow by using a circular disk or vane with its pivot axis at right angles to the direction of flow in the pipe. The butterfly valve requires a minimum of space and is used both for on-off and throttling services. The Metering Ball Valve is a unique control valve that allows instantaneous selection of any given flow rate within its range. The V-shaped groove in the ball continuously increases in width and depth so that the size of the orifice is changed from complete shut-off to maximum size as the ball is rotated over the whole setting range.
